Place on your Calendars

2019 Memorial Day Flag Placement Ceremony
On Saturday, May 25, 2019, at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA, all Scouters are invited to participate in flag placement upon the graves of those who have served our Country.   Place on your calendar for a great community service project.
More information pending.
Great Lake Allatoona Cleanup
October 5, 2019.  Get ready to do a great community service project by cleaning the shoreline.  More details as-to where to meet and what to bring forth-coming.  For now, place on your calendars.

Immediate Need

Red Top Mountain - Clearing
Many are familiar with Red Top's Pioneer campsite, but, did you know there are more?   Casey Graebner has need for Units to come out and help clear some of the road and the actual campsites.  There is enough work for a couple weekends.  If you have Scouts needing a project and service hours, contact Casey.  scoutpack638@gmail.com | 770-841-5067

More Service Project Opportunities
Many service opportunities exist for all types of Units.  Some are well-known, others are not.  Glance through and see what opportunities are possible your Unit would enjoy doing.

Food pantries / kitchens
MUST, Never Alone
Help stock, distribute, and/or serve
Improvements / entertainment
E.g., Woodstock Nursing and Rehabilitation
Different projects have been done, e.g, bird-houses, and, Holiday singing has brought cheer to the residents, especially seeing Scouts involved.
Various nature projects
Corps of Engineers /
City governments (Parks & Rec)

A list of projects awaits Scouts from the Corps.  Checkout their pamphlet for more information and contacts.
Also checkout you local city's Parks and Recreation department.  They have lists of projects.  E.g., the new Woodstock City Park off Trickum Rd. is brand-new and will be in-need of projects done.
Adopt a Stream
Georgia EPD
Adopt and cleanup streams, e.g, Etowah or Little River
Assist other Units
Scouts
Sometimes, other Units are in need of assistance from other Scouters.  E.g., Pinewood Derby, other service projects.  Team-up and get to know other Units.
Landscaping
Almost anywhere
Many residents and business' can use a little extra help around the yard, especially those who are unable to get out for one reason or another.  Doing basic yard maintenance goes a long way.  Note: if taking donations, this would be a fundraiser.
Library / Pantry boxes
Little Free Library
Little Free Pantry
Along the trail in Woodstock are interesting little boxes.  To find-out more on these boxes, checkout the Little Free Library site.  The same for Little Free Pantry.
Camping clinics
Anyone, e.g., HOA, school
Most Scouting units camp.  Just as the National Park system has the Camping 101 program, camping Scouts could bring the outdoors to their friends and family.  Setup and do an Introduction to Camping clinic for those not involved in Camping.  Hint: if they like, they may want to do more and want to find out how.
Community Garden
Almost anyplace, especially congested areas
Have you ever hear someone say they'd like to have a garden but don't have a place to put one.  Check with the local government about making a community garden.  Not only is this a great project, but, provides the ability for ongoing service primarily with maintenance.
Campground cleanup
Allatoona Aquatics Base
Plenty of service projects await at the Aquatics Base.  Contact Mike Gulledge at  chairman@campallatoona.org to get a list of things needed.  Have more fun by camping-out for the weekend.

Checkout the Bryan on Scouting page for 101 Scout Service Project Ideas.

If your Unit has a new and/or unique service project you would not mind sharing, please contact Eugene Kachele at gsglk@comcast.net.
